I enjoyed these walks so much I am devoting this newsletter to the upcoming walk.
The Mesa Architects are presenting a series of “Mesa Walks & Talks” to discuss local history, environmental challenges and accomplishments, flora and fauna and its management, geological history and current conditions, and opportunities for improving our little slice of paradise! The series of four walks are intended to promote the vision and connectivity of a larger Mesa Loop Trail – a trail that would connect all the major parks and open spaces on the Mesa: Ledbetter, Shoreline, La Mesa, Douglas Family Preserve, Elings, Escondido, HondaValley, and the Santa Barbara City College trails.

The Saturday August 15 East Mesa “Walk & Talk” through West Santa Barbara
City College (SBCC) and the East Marine Terrace, will explore the current effort to restore
the lower Honda Valley and establish a trail through this biologically important habitat.

The walk alongside the lower Honda Valley, through the SBCC campus, and along
Ledbetter Beach into Shoreline Park will present views into the Arroyo Hondo Creek channel, and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.

Laurel Perez, Land Use Planner, will lead this third Mesa Walk & Talk. She will be joined by local biologist, Lawrence Hunt, who will speak about the diverse habitat and restoration effort planned for the lower Honda Valley.

Don Hartley, a long-standing instructor in SBCC’s Environmental Horticulture Department will also speak to the creek restoration effort planned for the lower Honda Valley.

Dr. Ed Keller, a highly acclaimed professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara in the Department of Earth Science and the Environmental Studies Program will
also join the walk.

Starting at SBCC West Campus (first parking lot after entrance) at 9:00 a.m., we will walk an approximate 2.3 mile route of moderate grade that will lead us alongside the lower Honda Valley to Loma Alta. We will discuss the biology of the lower Honda Valley and the current restoration effort and proposed trail. We will continue on to Ledbetter Beach and up to Santa Barbara Point where Dr. Keller will share geologic observations. The walk will loop through. Shoreline Park and head back toward SBCC where we will complete the walk.

We hope you will join us on this walk to meet your neighbors, learn more about the Mesa, and begin to visualize a Mesa Loop Trail. Our final walk is planned for September 12th. Please help us promote walking in our amazing neighborhood!

Terrain: Varied: Easy to Moderate Grade
Bring & Wear: Bring water and snacks if you like. Wear sun protection and athletic
shoes for walking trails, sidewalks, and paved streets.
Duration: 1 1/2 – 2 hours
