1. Your Home is an Investment
A Common Industry Claim
I invested in a 401k, and I bought my home. Can buying a home be considered an investment for my future? Yes, to some extent. However, my house differs from my 401k. I will not need to fund another 401k with the proceeds from my current one so I will have a place to sleep. That’s the difference between investing and buying a house.
Real Estate investors exist, but I’m talking about regular people who are buying a house to live in. Even if some-one sells their home after it doubles in price, they are still buyers in a market where prices have also doubled. This does not qualify as investing; rather, they are simply stabilizing their housing expenses.
2. Buying a House Is Fulfilling a “Dream”
A misleading idea I detest.
While many may hold a different opinion, I steadfastly stand by my aversion to using the term “dream” in this context. Referring to it as a dream undermines the immense amount of hard work involved in purchasing a home. Dreams are fluff, whereas buying a home demands perseverance, diligent effort, and unwavering commitment.
3. The Misconception of “It’s Like Free Money”
Referring to Recent Low Interest Rates
Even though I bought my home in 2020 at an extraordinarily low interest rate, most of my monthly mortgage payments are still allocated towards interest. It is borrowed and must be paid back. That is not free money.
